Checklist
AI search optimization: the practical checklist.
Work through this in order. Each step is observable, each fix is testable, and none of it involves promises about what an AI system will say.
1. The machine layer
- Pages return real HTML for crawlers — check what renders without JavaScript.
- robots.txt exists and does not block anything it should not.
- An XML sitemap exists, is referenced, and contains only indexable URLs.
- Canonicals are consistent; no conflicting signals between tags, sitemaps, and redirects.
- An
llms.txtlists the site's key pages and primary concepts.
2. The entity layer
- Organization and WebSite JSON-LD are present and connected by
@id. - People, products, and services have their own nodes where they exist as real entities.
- The same facts (name, address, contact, sameAs) are consistent across the site and the wider web.
- FAQPage schema only marks up questions that are visibly answered on the page.
3. The content layer
- Every important page states a question and answers it in the first paragraphs.
- Definitions, numbers, and specifics appear as plain text — not only in images or PDFs.
- Headings are literal and descriptive ("How X works", "What X costs").
- Claims carry dates, sources, and named evidence where they exist.
4. The measurement layer
- Track which queries surface your pages in Search Console, including AI-search channels.
- Record which AI answers cite or mention your business, with date and prompt, before and after changes.
- Change one variable at a time and wait for crawl plus retrieval to catch up.
Watch for the zero-click effect. A top-3 impression with no click in an AI answer is normal — the answer consumed your content. Measure impressions and citations for these queries, not just clicks.
Frequently asked questions
- What is AI search optimization?
- AI search optimization is the work of making a website eligible to be retrieved, interpreted, and cited by AI-powered search experiences — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and agentic assistants.
- Where do you start with AI search optimization?
- Start with the machine layer: pages that render for crawlers, valid robots and sitemaps, consistent canonicals, and a connected entity graph. Then make your highest-value pages answer-shaped and citable.
- How long does AI search optimization take?
- Technical and structural fixes can ship in days or weeks. Visibility then depends on crawling, retrieval, and content strength, so results are observed over weeks to months — like SEO, it compounds.
