Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), explained.
Generative engine optimization is the practice of making content visible and usable to generative AI systems — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and agentic search — instead of optimizing only for ranked blue links.
The four layers of GEO
1. Crawlable
A generative system can only use what it can fetch and parse. That means a valid robots.txt, a complete sitemap, clean HTML that renders without JavaScript, and no accidental noindex or blocking rules.
2. Structured
Machines need the business described as entities, not adjectives. JSON-LD graphs (Organization, WebSite, Person, Product, FAQ), llms.txt, and consistent facts across pages let a system connect the business to a question.
3. Answer-ready
Generative systems retrieve passages and synthesize answers. Content that states a question and then answers it directly — with definitions, specifics, and short paragraphs — survives extraction better than brand prose.
4. Citable
AI systems increasingly cite sources. Pages with named sources, dates, and traceable claims are easier to cite — and easier for a person to verify after the AI points at you.
What GEO can and cannot do
| GEO can | GEO cannot |
|---|---|
| Make pages fetchable, parseable, and indexable | Force a model to retrieve a specific page |
| Describe the business as structured entities | Guarantee a citation or mention |
| Make answers direct and extractable | Create trust that the underlying facts do not support |
| Improve retrieval eligibility, measurably | Replace honest, verifiable claims |
Frequently asked questions
- What is generative engine optimization?
- Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content visible and usable to generative AI systems by controlling crawlability, structured data, answer-ready content, and citable evidence — and measuring real observations instead of promised placements.
- Is generative engine optimization real?
- The practice is real; the promises usually are not. Crawlability, schema, and content structure demonstrably affect whether a system can interpret and retrieve a page. What is not real is any guarantee of citations, mentions, or trust.
- How is GEO measured?
- By observation: which queries surface your pages, which AI answers cite your sources, and how retrieval changes after a change ships. Repeated, controlled observation — not a single screenshot.
